The Matriculation Board forms an integral part of the newly formed Higher Education South Africa (HESA), which is constituted by twenty-three universities. The Board regulates admission to first degree studies at eleven of these public universities as well as six comprehensive universities.

In addition, some private Higher Education institutions voluntarily affiliate to the Matriculation Board in order to benefit from the services offered, e.g. Monash South Africa.

This Board advises the Minister of Education via Higher Education South Africa (HESA) on the minimum general admission requirements for first bachelor’s degree studies.

The Board is responsible for administering the matriculation endorsement and exemption requirements in accordance with regulations approved by the Minister of Education and published in the Government Gazette.

The requirements for admission to Higher Certificate and Diploma programmes offered by the six universities of technology and six comprehensive institutions are determined institutionally by the individual institutions. It is anticipated that in the near future this service will also be taken up by the Matriculation Board`s successor.

It is intended to keep you abreast with latest developments. The page is for member only; therefore you have to use the same username and password used for tracking application.

» The Matriculation Board has activated its online application system for both prospective foreign first-degree entrants and the holders of the South African Senior Certificate from 1996.If you obtained South African Senior Certificate prior to 1996 you may enquire if you will qualify for exemption by either fax to 086 677 7744 (National) or +27 12 481 2922 (International) or email your documents to exemption@hesa-enrol.ac.za

The on-line service will enable holders of South African Senior Certificate from 1996 and foreign school qualifications to do the following:

• Assess whether their qualifications meet the admission requirements to first university degree studies; and
• Apply for the issuing of a certificate of exemption required for admission to first university degree studies.
